How Long Does THC Stay in Your System? Urine, Blood, Saliva & Hair

The short answer: it depends on the test and how often you use. After a single use, THC is usually detectable in urine for about 3 days. Daily users can test positive for 10–15 days, and heavy long-term users for 30 days or more. Blood and saliva tests catch only recent use (about 1–2 days). Hair tests look back about 90 days.

Chart of typical THC detection windows: saliva up to about 2 days, blood about 1–2 days, urine 3 to 30+ days, hair about 90 days

How Long Does THC Stay in Your Urine?

Urine tests don’t look for THC itself. They look for THC-COOH, a metabolite your body makes as it breaks THC down. It’s stored in fat and released slowly, which is why it lingers. Typical windows from clinical drug-testing references:

How often you useTypical urine window
OnceAbout 3 days
A few times a weekAbout 5–7 days
DailyAbout 10–15 days
Heavy, long-term daily use30 days or more

How Long Does THC Stay in Your Blood?

THC moves out of the bloodstream quickly. For most people, a blood test reflects use in roughly the last 1–2 days. Frequent heavy users can show low levels for longer. Blood tests are mostly used after accidents or in legal situations, not routine screening.

How Long Does THC Show Up in Saliva?

Mouth-swab tests are designed to catch recent use, typically up to about 48 hours. They’re popular because they’re quick and hard to tamper with.

How Far Back Does a Hair Test Go?

A standard 1.5-inch scalp-hair sample covers about the last 90 days. Hair takes about a week to grow out above the scalp, so a hair test usually won’t catch use from the last few days.

What Changes How Long THC Stays in Your System?

  • How often you use. The biggest factor by far. Daily use builds up stored metabolites.
  • How much and how strong. High-THC flower, concentrates and big edible doses add up faster.
  • Body fat and metabolism. THC metabolites are stored in fat, so they can clear more slowly for some people.
  • The test itself. Different tests use different cutoff levels, so the same person can pass one test and fail another.

Products sold to “flush” or “detox” THC aren’t a reliable way to change a result. Time is what clears it.

Detection Isn’t the Same as Being High

The effects of smoking or vaping usually fade within a few hours, and edibles within several hours. A test can still come back positive days or weeks later. That’s why a positive test doesn’t prove someone was impaired.

Drug Tests and Work in New Jersey

New Jersey’s cannabis law protects most workers from being punished just for legal, off-duty use. Employers can still ban use at work, test for impairment, and act on signs of impairment on the job. Some jobs tied to federal contracts or funding are exceptions. For the full rundown on what’s legal, see Is Weed Legal in NJ? Where You Can (and Can’t) Smoke. If your job is on the line, talk to HR or an employment lawyer.

Thinking About a Break?

If your tolerance is high, a break lowers it, and the timing above shows why a few days isn’t always enough. When you come back, start with lower-THC options. Ask our budtenders, or browse the strain guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does THC stay in your urine?

It depends on how often you use. Typical urine detection windows are about 3 days after a single use, 5–7 days with use a few times a week, 10–15 days with daily use, and 30 days or more with heavy, long-term use.

How long does THC stay in your blood?

Usually about 1–2 days, though it can be longer for frequent, heavy users.

How long does THC show up in a saliva test?

Saliva (mouth swab) tests usually detect recent use, typically up to about 48 hours.

How far back does a hair test go?

A standard scalp-hair test covers roughly the last 90 days. It won’t usually catch use from the past week, because hair takes time to grow out.

Do edibles stay in your system longer than smoking?

Both produce the same metabolite that urine tests look for. How often and how much you use matter more than the format.

Do detox drinks work?

There’s no reliable evidence that detox products speed up how fast your body clears THC. Time is what clears it.

Does a positive test mean you’re high?

No. Tests detect THC or its metabolites, which can linger long after the effects wear off. Detection isn’t the same as impairment.

Can a NJ employer fire you for a positive THC test?

Under New Jersey law, most employers can’t take action against you just for legal, off-duty use or a positive metabolite test alone. They can act on signs of impairment at work, and some federal-contract jobs are exceptions. Check with HR or an employment lawyer about your situation.
